Community Tasting Notes 5

June 16, 2020 - Magnificent. My last of 5 bottles, and easily the best. Like a mature Bordeaux, for example, it had the aromas that a great wine at its absolute peak of maturity emits. The palate, too, was completely in the zone. I'd had this nearly two years ago, I rated it highly recommended, this performance was even greater than that; I feel really lucky. Medium-bodied, but carries itself as a full-bodied wine - in the best of ways. If this bottle was any indication (easily the best of the 5 bottles I owned), it's going to hold here another 5-7 years no problem, likely more. 13,0% abv. highly recommended

September 18, 2018 - PnP that was utterly stunning. Medium body, red fruits, great structure and a lightly sweet core of Nebbiolo fruit. Perfect with baked chicken, broccolini, and mirepoix. Wow. Should hold several years at this level. highly recommended

May 20, 2018 - Cellaraid Discovery Box; 5/19/2017-5/26/2021 (Delivered to Home): deep garnet, bit of sediments; full bodied, but rather mild and short; strawberry, cassis, rose, lavender, grass, mesquite smoke, roast beef

January 24, 2017 - Another highly enjoyable bottle. This started out rough, as in that farm you hated visiting as a kid - it stunk, was dirty, just yuck. 15 minutes in decanter, and this was beginning to yield quite different aromas - worn leather, savory, black soil, a pinch of dried/dead herbs, some truffle. So I let it sit, with the occasional swirling of the decanter as I continued to prepare dinner. The wine changed, as I hoped/knew it was going to, and slowly red fruits began to emerge. By the one hour mark, all of the undesirable aromas had dissipated, replaced by equal mixes of fruit and more interesting tertiary notes. I took a sip at the 90 minute mark, my first taste. I was pleased with the overall build, but especially how fresh the acidity was. I served this with some pappardelle, whole clove garlic and basil red sauce and some spicy bison sausages - both the food and wine went to the next level, as if to create new flavors as a result of the combination of the wine and food. Creating something that didn't exist before, creating a new thing from an old thing, just like that, can be/seem magical, if you will, and last night's pairing bordered on just such a thing. To add to the overall pleasure is the fact that this is just 13,0% abv., which for me, helps to bring out more of the nuanced aspects of the wine and food that might otherwise be masked by too much oak/EtOH. Mature now, and for the next 5-7 years. Very happy to have two more; wish I had a case. recommended

Served non-blind; cork and fill in vg cond. LOTS of sediment.

November 9, 2016 - On PnP, some reduction and VA, but early into the second glass, this had all vanished. Medium-bodied, red-fruited, with gentle tannins and avg complexity. The freshness really came alive by the third glass, as did some additional body and a more elegant textural component. I have since acquired three more as this represents a solid value in mature Alto Piemonte wine. Cork and fill were vg. recommended

Served non-blind, at Gennaro's in San Luis Obispo (excellent with the qualie & mascarpone risotto)
