January 15, 2008 - A very decent QPR wine: nothing hyper-exciting, nothing mind blowing, but just a solid, well made Vacqueyras. Nose and palate still need 24 hours to open up. Then it's spicy Grenache all over the place: savory strawberry cream, white pepper, some kirsh and garrigue. Well balanced with fresh sours, slightly powdery tannins and an average aftertaste. Good to very good.

February 16, 2006 - Syrah and Grenache. As I am just a newbie in Southern French wine tasting this was something of a genuine surprise. Yet I can only give it something like 84-86 because I think it's still too young by now, but nevertheless: a nice surprise. I would never have thought a wine could smell and taste that raw, animal-like and melancholy [sic!].
Colour ruby with white rims (not yet a brown evolution). Purple kernel. No real reflection. There are definetely 'sheets' of light on the surface, but they seem to be absorbed a bit by the density of the liquid. Long legs, tears treacling down so slowly that it looks as if there are crenellated lines in your glass. On the nose a cavalry of leather, bark, wet leaf soil and mushrooms. After waltzing red currant juice, red plum, some very faint violet and an overwhelming black pepper finale. Meaty, prickling and astringent on the palate, though slim in the mouth. Taste initially of course leather, but also some wet tobacco, mushrooms and a mineral hint (wet slate?). Deepening into red currant and black pepper. At the end already a faint hint of liquorice. Aftertaste not long, not short (6-7 secs).
A big WOW for me, but maybe that's just because I haven't tasted anything like it yet. I'll look for more of these autumnal and earthly Vacqueyras-beasts ... .
(Maybe interesting to know: Vacqueyras only became an AOC in 1990)
