Community Tasting Notes 2

January 26, 2019 - Eye: bordeaux red, only transparant at the edges
    Nose: leather, black berries, alcohol
Palate: good acidity, well-balanced, dry, I clearly notice some tannins. which are well integrated

Overall: good wine (well-made and -balanced), but since it's a Dão I hoped it would bear a little bit more expression...

March 31, 2018 - The bottle says "Caniças Colheita 2012". 100% Touriga Nacional. 13% alcohol.

Quite deep dark cherry color, almost fully opaque. Somewhat restrained and a bit closed nose with delicately aromatic notes of fresh red fruits, some smoke, crunchy cranberries, a little bit of ripe blackberries, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of sun-scorched stones. Overall very savory nose, not really sweet at all. The wine is medium-bodied, juicy and dry on the palate with savory flavors of raspberries, wild strawberries, some smoky reduction, a little bit of peppery spice and a hint of stony minerality. Overall the wine feels pure, lively and well-delineated in style. High in acidity with quite gentle and mellow tannins. The finish is long, pure and juicy with crunchy flavors of brambly dark berries, some tart cranberries, a little bit of peppery spice and a hint of gunpowder smoke.

A nice, fresh and pure red wine that is atypically light and delicate for a Touriga Nacional - usually varietal wines made from this variety tend to be quite massive, tough and concentrated in style. This is more in the fresh, pure and easy-drinking style. However, the wine seems somewhat reductive still, at more than 5 years of age, making me think that some more cellar age might make it come across as a bit more open and vibrant. At least decanting didn't seem to help now as the wine was double-decanted for a few hours before the tasting. Great value at 13,90€, but perhaps a bit underwhelming for now.
