April 24, 2022 - Medium garnet, a little bricking at the rim. Well well... some mature aromas of dried red fruits, oranges, spice and leather - a little like a Christmas pomander. With some time, chocolate and incense come forward. This is silky in the mouth and there's plenty of fruit, with some balanced acidity that increases on the finish. Perhaps there's a touch of lift from VA but it's not objectionable - it's barely noticeable. Draper's notes on the back say drink by 2002... I think that's a tad conservative.

December 12, 2014 - Better than the last bottle I tried, though still not really exciting. Bright red fruit, earth, and some funky leathery and other bretty elements at first, though with air a strong VA note becomes increasingly prominent and overwhelms a lot of the other complexities here.

December 12, 2014 - After several older Ridge Mataros, my expectations were admittedly high. Yet, the previous bottle of this wine was quite disjointed and showed VA. This one also showed VA, but instead of a muddled mess, was fairly thin on the palate. After some time, notes of ethyl acetate / nail polish became quite prominent. Plenty of underlying structure and nice funk and earth on the nose, but impossible to drink. Will give some air and retry.

November 20, 2014 - Third Thursday blind tasting group - Mourvedre's (Mike's) (11/20/2014): Feels rather tired, with a strong volatile acidity note on top of some tired, older red fruited flavours. Not sure this bottle was pristine, but regardless, a big disappointment for older Ridge Mataro.

November 20, 2014 - Mourvedre (TTTG blind tasting): I have liked every Ridge Mataro up to now. I have *loved* several. This one is a weird, disjointed mess. By wine drank, this is nearly last.
After a couple of days open in the cellar, the wine revealed a bit of what could have been, with some love Mourvedre "funk," deep rich red fruit, herbal notes. Alas, both the VA and the advanced age suggest a less-than-perfect bottle. I have one more which (hopefully) will show better.
