October 11, 2020 - Well made but no match for the preceding mullineux

February 15, 2020 - Restaurant Pop and Pour.
Incorrectly priced in this restaurant at 15€. The weather is cool, so this was at a good temperature, and took very little time to open up - in a great spot right now - lush and deep, some plums - fine finish - very nice wine indeed.

January 4, 2019 - A blend of Aragonez, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet, all varieties vinified separately. Aragonez and Syrah vinified in open-top fermenters with regular foot-trodden pigeage, Alicante Bouschet in closed fermenter with only regular pumpovers. Aged for 18 months in 228-liter French oak barriques (70% once used, 30% new). 14,5% alcohol, 2 g/l residual sugar, 6,75 g/l acidity, pH 3,6.

Saturated and quite concentrated dark cherry red color with a hint of youthful purple hue. Permits a little bit of light through. Dense, concentrated and rather sweet-toned nose with rich aromas of ripe blackcurrants, some vanilla oak, a little bit of boysenberry jam, light inky tones, a boozy hint of alcohol and an oaky touch of milk chocolate. The overall feel is powerful, but also rather modern and not particularly Portuguese. The wine is full-bodied, concentrated and rather modern on the palate with powerful, extracted flavors of dark-toned, toasty oak spice, ripe dark plums, juicy blackberries, some chocolatey mocha oak, a little bit of boysenberry jam, light fragrant notes of dried aromatic herbs, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of vanilla. The acidity feels wholly inadequate to bring any sense of freshness to the wine and the structure relies almost completely on the assertive and very grippy tannins. The finish is bold and tannic with concentrated, sweet-toned flavors of toasty oak spice and mocha, juicy dark plums, some blackberry jam, a little bit of vanilla and a hint of extracted woody bitterness.

An impressively big, powerful and muscular powerhouse of a wine that feels just too much - this is more like a modern and atypically tannic Napa Cabernet than a typical Portuguese red. There's just too much oak, ripeness of sweet-toned fruit and way too much extraction with all too little acidity. A modernist monster wine that's built to impress, but not to be particularly enjoyable. Hopefully +10 down in a cellar might grant this wine some more balance and finesse. I really didn't find this wine particularly enjoyable and it feels excessively overpriced for the style at 67€.

January 4, 2019 - Still very young, jammy sweet, rosemary, lots of stuff protuberates out of the glass, gives the impression that much much effort was put into this to produce a g r e a t wine, I hope that age fixes this and the wine comes together, I would give this one more time in the cellar.
