Community Tasting Notes 2

September 27, 2022 - Deep garnet with slight bricking in color while the nose is aromatic with vibrant fresh red fruits, peppery spices, fresh floral overtones, vanilla and a slight hint of game. The palate of this South African Syrah is quite lively, expansive, medium-bodied, good intensity in a nice watery way, with fine tannins and plenty of refreshing acidity which makes this a very lively, tasty and complex wine. The palate starts off with fresh and juicy dark red fruits, lots of peppery goodness, wild flowers, grassy herbs, sophisticated vanilla oak that really is assertive yet not overbearing, fresh brewed arabica coffee, and plenty wet stones which is quite pronounced towards the deliciously satisfying finish. Initially I didn’t know that to expect from this wine (since this was given as a gift) but now that I have tasted it, I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by its precision, purity, depth and balance of this big Syrah despite the whopping 15% abv. indicated on the label. Truly a phenomenal wine, brimming with plenty of verve and personality and one that is drinking beautifully now at 11 years of age.

It’s interesting to note that this Cotie Rotie style Syrah is the sole wine that this vineyard produces and a result of a collaboration between the Englebrecht family of Rust en Vrede in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and the Duncan family of the famed Silver Oak in Napa Valley, California.
