Community Tasting Notes 2

July 14, 2019 - Hmmm, not what we were expecting based on price, provenance and past reviews. Tasted over two evenings. Decanted approx 90 mins. First sample: Alcohol dominated the nose. Lots of oaky vanilla with trace whiffs of dark red fruits. On the palate it is an out-of-balance pitched battle of alcohol, tannin and acid. Our conclusion was the wine must be backwards with the fruit in its dormancy. Last sample first evening did not improve. Capped the decanter and agreed to try it the following night. Second night assessment: alcohol was still dominant on the nose and the sweet vanilla spice was the major aroma characteristic. On the palate it was all tannin & acid. There was black cherry but it was more like a Jolly Rancher candy version than the depth of rich fruit flavour I would have expected. We’ll keep our last bottle for a few years and see if alchemy prevails.

August 5, 2015 - Wow, this is a beautiful Cab Franc. I was expecting something bigger because of the limited yield (1.2 ton/acre), but it was all finesse. I always thought I was able to correctly identify wines made by Bill Eggert from Fairview...but I was wrong, the very specific aroma I get in Bill's wines is something common to the top wines from the Golden Mile Bench. I would have bet a lot of money that this wine was from Fairview Cellars!! Fresh, aromatic (this very specific, floral/berry aroma) and quite long, I love this wine - no trace of herbal or green aromas that I usually get from Cab Franc from the Loire valley. I'll uncork my second bottle in about 5-6 years.
