June 8, 2020 - Since some restrictions were lifted and drinking sessions at family and friends houses was allowed again i immediately ventured to my brother in law tim's. A raft of saved up little beauties was to be presented all blind. he and I alternating bottles.
like all old wine its hit and miss. a 73 Leo Buring Riesling was had it, ( yet i've had it before and its superb - or should i say "ethereal"). 1987 Wynns Ovens Valley shiraz was corked but would have been a cracker. A bad bottle of 1991 Rockford Basket Press ( and the only bad one he or i could recall and we have both consumed well over a few hundred bottles of RBP). 1980 Bests Claret was nice but nothing like their Shiraz Mouvedre special bottling from the same year ( if you can find it get it) . however we got motoring finally with a 2002 Ashton Hills Pinot that was drinking way younger than its 18 years. we then drank a 1928 ( yes i said 1928) Villamont Beune, refer my tasting notes on that. also a first vintage 1992 Bests Thompson, which i must gloat a little and say i picked it as 91/92 great western shiraz - so i chalked that one up to a perfect guess, much to my BIL's annoyance.
Anyway enough prattling , which brings us onto the 69 Yalumba. Ive had this wine for decades as its a birth year and not that many great 69 reds were made in Australia. i recently got another at MW in much better condtion so though i would open this one. it was VHS. from the immediate pour into the decanter the colour was unbelievable. deep crimson with only slight browning but translucent edge. and the aroma whilst smelling like Tim had passed something in his pants before reaching the toilet to start with soon blew off. the palate was simply amazing. sweet long earthy red fruit, a touch of herbs and many complex nuances but what it all added up to was pure barossa earth. Terroir! at its simple best. and no rush to drink this 51 year old beauty, it aint going anyway. if i make it to my 60th this is when the next one will be opened. Kudos Yalumba
