Community Tasting Notes 2

February 22, 2015 - Tasted during a South Australia vineyard safari. This apparently gets more American oak and is a parcel selection of the Squid Ink wine. Very dark purple. Nose of dark berry, oak, scorched earth, meat. Full bodied palate with solid tannic structure. Good overall freshness and balance despite the high alcohol. If you like the more of everything style this is a wine to try. Since it is from McLaren Vale it is not as hot as the Barossa version of these kind of wines.

October 13, 2014 - "2015" Sydney International Wine Show - stewarding notes; 10/11/2014-10/16/2014 (Blue Mountains, NSW): {screwcap, 14.5%} I gather this is extremely expensive; it certainly tastes that way, with deep-chested spicy aromas, liquorice, blackberry; classic warm-climate Oz shiraz which stops short of smelling port-like; the palate offers plenty of vanilla and chocolate flavours in addition to the aromas; it also avoids toppling over into the ‘dead-grape’ style of wine which is so popular (intentionally or otherwise) among those who’ve chased the extremes of Robert Parker’s apparent palate prejudices. This is full-bodied, with medium powdery tannins, with balanced oak, a lots of mid-palate presence, medium acidity and a medium/long dry finish. The style is edging towards extreme, sure, but this is still a pretty impressive powerhouse shiraz which deserves a decade’s cellaring to see what happens. Very sybaritic indeed.
