November 18, 2022 - Pale garnet, some bricking, unfiltered
Aromatics medium. Pencil lead, dark rose, old cedar, dry herbs, and earth/tar minerality. Beautiful.
Palate has a medium body. Acid medium +. Tannins medium +, fine grained and integrated. Alcohol medium +. Chalky old plum, tart cherry and dust. Overtime, the palate opens up regarding the fruit.
Finish has a medium length. Balanced structure.
I really enjoyed the nose, but for me the palate is all structure based initially with not a lot of fruit initially. Given time, the later does rise.
    Drinking well now.

May 21, 2022 - Next bottle from Piemont to pair some grilled stuff again,
full bodied appearance, earthy tones, flowered, black and red fruit, really meaty,
good grip and lively acid still, but for me a little unbalanced over all, a lean component? long finish, needs a lot more time in my view, or never will get structured? *(**-****?), - 93?
    not really mine tonight

February 6, 2022 - One off ($59.99) from online wine clearinghouse #1, purchased about 2 years ago. On the nose, semisweet red cherries, plum skins, mixed sweet and ground spice, earthy minerality, roses and a dash of tar. Very light garnet out of the bottle darkening, and filling out, with a couple of hours of air, light to medium bodied, light legs. Very brisk acidity and medium++ tannins, no heat. Good complexity, VG++ intensity and persistence. Like many Barolos (and CdPs, and to a lesser extent, BdMs), this came out of the bottle, pale, lean and angular, almost Burgundian, but became more fulsome and rounded. While this didn’t have the clenched feel of the recent Vietti, it also certainly lacked the generosity, depth and expressiveness of last year’s ‘12 Vajra Bricco. Really nice with seafood risotto and a surprise hit with burritos, this solidly held it own on its own for a longtime acid junky like me, but make no mistake, even with filling out, this wine remained on the lithe and taut side of the Barolo spectrum. I’ve been somewhat underwhelmed by Fontanafredda in the past, finding it inconsistent, and even when on, lagging my Barolo houses of choice—Vajra, Scavino, and when flush, Sandrone (if I find some stray bearer bonds, I’ll add Mascarello to the list), but this is a more than solid effort. Still, with some careful shopping, the above can sometimes be found for not much more, or at least could have, until Italian wine prices hit the up button 18 months-2 years ago, and would be my recommendation for those considering a dip in the Barolo pool. Like many Barolos from this outstanding vintage, closer to the start than the end of its drinking window, IMO, holding very steady over the 3 days it was open.

December 24, 2021 - Superb Barolo. Everything you would expect at almost 12 years old. Drink now with 2 hour decant or hold for 3-5.
