November 17, 2023 - (red) wine of the night for me — impeccable condition, still quite dark with only the slightest browning on the edges, gorgeous ethereal mellow palate of tart fruits and perfectly integrated savory mushrooms

April 1, 2023 - Quite light in color. While this showed quite a bit of maturity, with dried flowers, leather and mushrooms, it also retained fantastic freshness and lift. The fill level and cork were outstanding. I suspect this was a reconditioned bottle.

May 5, 2019 - Wow, what a nose. Nebbiolo perfume, red fruit, some mushroomy goodness. Great acidity. Double decanted and drank 3 hours later, still going strong. Good long finish.

October 11, 2018 - Dark, developed and somewhat translucent cherry red color. Quite concentrated and dark-toned nose wiht aromas of dried dark berries, some metallic bretty notes of rusted iron, a little bit of wizened sour cherries, a funky hint of stable floor and a touch of dusty earth. The wine is full-bodied, ripe and somewhat sweet-toned with developed flavors of tart lingonberries, some bretty notes of iron, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light pruney tones, a hint of leather and a touch of tar. The wine is still quite structured with rather high acidity and somewhat grippy medium tannins. The finish is quite tough and lean with long, dry flavors of sour cherries, crunchy cranberries, some tart lingonberries, a little bit of rusted iron and a hint of leather.

A very developed and quite tertiary Gattinara that still carries the ripeness of the 1964 vintage but is starting to lose its fruit and become somewhat hollow and lean. Most likely the wine must've been better a decade ago or so - the wine isn't oxidized or dead, but starting to thin out quite a bit. Still drinkable and recognizable enough to be worthy of a (modest) score, but not for long. Quite underwhelming compared to the Nervi Gattinaras of 1964.

July 12, 2016 - Auction purchase. Neck fill with pristine, brand new cork: must be a recent ex-chateau release. Not decanted. Hazy mahogany brick red color. Lovely old bouquet of dried red cherries, leather, tar, dried roses, red clay and stony soil. Similar on the palate, balanced, pleasantly tart. Stayed intact for a few hours and was maderized by the next day.
