April 28, 2024 - I would agree with Dave Mosko’s comments (we drank this at dinner last night). I would say this was the best bottle of this I’ve ever drank. I gave it about a three hour decant before the dinner, and it showed very well next to the Vietti (and was a great match for the Rigatoni Bolognese).

I have had some bottle variation here in the past, but last night this was a gorgeous 30 year old Barolo 🍷👍

April 27, 2024 - Paired tonite w/ a rigatoni bolognese and it slightly bested a 96 Vietti Brunate which presented younger and almost not ready. The Roagna was red fruited silky and ready to drink as well as a really nice match for the pasta. The class here was undeniable and this bottle was pretty much on fire. A very autumnal wine with fall leaves and an earthy presence. It struck a balance that rose above expectations and I think this bottle was at peak performance.

March 2, 2024 - A Nebbiolo with a very dark complexion. It smelled of cigars, earth, and dark cherry. I decanted the wine for about two hours and it proceeded to lose some of the earthy/savory characteristics to showcase more of its florals and tart berry fruit. The last glass of the night was the undoubtedly the best a few hours after dinner. It was significantly less brooding and more in line with my expectations for the wine. Overall really pretty but took a while to gain its stride.

October 8, 2021 - Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2021 Edition; 10/8/2021-10/10/2021 (Piemonte, Italy): We love off vintages that turn out to be superb ( especially from 1993). This unexpected beauty was very much a great call from Gianpiero of Il Centro a Priocca as something special to try. And indeed it was special. Lacking a great rich vintage this was a lot more expressive and soft ( compared to 96 Riserva Pira we had just before, Papies 94) , lacks weight here’s but has a charm and complexity that only comes by the randomness of old slightly off vintages. If the last sentence ( a wine way of life for us) makes sense to you then this would be a superb experience for you as it was for us. 95

October 5, 2021 - Well, thankfully, this wine is more my style - I just had a glass of a Passopisciaro Etna Rosso that weighed in at 15.5% alcohol - talk about "shock & awe" on the palate.

This is nicely balanced on the palate, but I would caution that off this bottle, this is fully mature and may be starting to head downhill. It has the faintest maderized note on the nose. So to put that in context, best described as an autumnal note on the nose intermingled with mentholated cherry - so not unpleasant at all, but if you have this in the cellar, something to keep your eye on as we near it's 30th year.
