February 28, 2024 - Three decades of Screaming Eagle: Very mature and very ripe, not slipping into overripness territory as other 97 do, but just on the edge. This also means that I wouldn't keep this for too long.Plums, medicine cabinet, leather, dried tomatoes. Good, but for me clearly lagging behind some of the other vintages.

December 3, 2023 - While the nose of the 1997 Screaming Eagle is a little reserved, it shows remarkable resonance on the palate with wave after wave of fresh blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and violet potpourri expressed in an intense yet fine profile. There has such beautiful depth and verve. The fresh, zippy acid is fantastic. This reminds me of nothing so much as a very fine Leoville Las Cases.

December 2, 2023 - California Wine Weekend; 12/1/2023-12/3/2023 (Mos Eisley Cantina & Waterhouse Restaurant): Nose: Exceptionally pure nose bringing endless blackberry, raspberry and red terra cotta notes. Perfumed and elegant. Palate: Really delivers with freshness, and red/black fruit laced with violet, herb and warm red clay. Finish: detailed and lengthy blackberry, blueberry, cardamom and powdery tannin.

Demonstrates why screaming eagle is so singular, and the Heidi Barrett era there is so legendary. The touch on this wine is exceptional, and nothing hides the east oakville terroir. Transports you back to Oakville cross road on a sunny afternoon.

The 1997 flight was prepared with a 1-hour slow ox for all of the wines.

    October 20, 2021 - Celebrating our 25th anniversary tonight

I was prepared and even expecting to be disappointed opening the most expensive bottle in our cellar - but I was not.

Surely no wine is worth $4900, but this is one of the two or three greatest California wines I've ever had.

The experience started with the cork which had an intense and lovely smell like fresh violets and sweet blueberries served on balsa wood.

Slightly brick red at the rim, we chose not to decant.

The nose starts with strawberries, but that gives way to darker fruits - plum, blackberry and blueberry - and hints of cinnamon and tobacco.

On the palate the wine is reminiscent of a rich blackberry compote and is plummy and just a little bit figgy. There is also a cardamom note. As the night wore on the flavor profile added a rich dark chocolate.

The texture is round and almost creamy. The finish is very long. There isn't a wrong note anywhere. A total pleasure to drink.

This is at its peak right now and while it will be for at least 5 more years I cannot see holding it beyond that as i don't think it can get much better than this.

We have one more bottle. All we need is a special occasion...

October 28, 2020 - A bottle directly from the winery in April of 2001 and cellared since then. Rich black fruits and completely rounded tannins almost to a fault made for a wonderful first 1/2 hour; however thereafter began tasting a bit stewed. Would not hold on this any longer
