August 23, 2017 - I've yet to meet a Clos des Fous offering I didn't like, and this was certainly no exception - full of red fruit, herbs, and typical Chilean funk. I was a little surprised at the alcohol level, given that this Pinot hails from about the furthest south vineyards in Chile go; when a bit chilled it had Oregon like savouriness, but as it warmed up it showed the riper, bolder fruit of a California version. The wine didn't hesitate to show it's roots right away, providing a strong herbal quality along with meat and smoke on both the nose and palate. Strawberry, sour cherry, and baked plum mixed with forest and gravel notes. Touches of vanilla and charred wood showed evidence of oak, but stayed relatively subtle and hung in the background. The bottle showed a number of progressions over a few days, but ultimately the finish gave cured meat and hints of dark chocolate. At 14%, this wasn't exactly a light sipper, but moderate tannins and acidity at least provided a pleasant mouthfeel. If only they could get that alcohol level down, I'd say this would have exceptional potential - still, I'm not complaining about the experience. This proved a great option for exploring the ever expanding world of Pinot Noir!

May 19, 2017 - Transparent. Very subtle bing cherry and slate on nose. Leather and subdued fruit on the palate. Old world in style. Very pleasant. Not a great QPR, but a well-made wine.

December 13, 2016 - Some hints of cherries, raspberries. The nose was somewhat subdued, nothing really outstanding or complex. In Canada at $45, this is what we find for our money.

September 21, 2016 - Light and transparent in the glass. On the nose, ripe and mineral strawberries and white pepper. On the palette, red currant and raspberries. Nice balance, full of character, and a great price.
