April 6, 2023 - Nose is tight and suffocated at first, slowly opening notes of cooked fruit and cherry, meat, and brine. Fruit develops with a decant, and it starts to open up and get that jammy Syrah aroma going. Toast, cherry and dark fruits, a touch of tobacco and raw meat on the palate as well. Fine, resolved and slightly peppery tannin on the back of the palate, well integrated with soft, round acidity. Finish is nice, short to medium...this is another great well made and easy to drink Dehlinger right smack in the middle of its prime.

November 26, 2022 - This is in a great place. Balanced and concentrated. Mouth puckering dark fruit.

March 20, 2022 - Well worth the wait. Decanted. After hour one it was good. After hour 2 it was great. Full of flavor and well rounded. Loads of fruit, some hints of smoke and black pepper. Full in the mouth and crisp aftertaste. Really satisfying.

November 20, 2021 - Dehlinger's 2012 Frei Road Syrah is an opaque garnet wine that oozes blackberry and dark plum fruit, accented with notes of espresso, smoke, licorice and bittersweet chocolate. Full-bodied, low-to-medium in acidity and with amazingly tame alcohol (despite the 15.4% label), it buttresses the flavors with abundant silky-textured tannins and a complementary dollop of wood. Ripe and rich on the mid-palate, it moves on to a medium-to-long finish that is impressively smooth. This "fruit bomb" is certainly fun to drink, but lacks the elegance of some of Delinger's other Syrah bottlings. This may be due to the fact that these Frei Road offerings (no longer produced after 2014) were sourced from grapes that were farmed by the Martinelli family rather than the Dehlingers. This particular well-cellared bottle was Vinturi-decanted, improving significantly after the first hour in decanter. Drink now-2032.
