Community Tasting Notes 1

    October 9, 2018 - 13% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Slightly cloudy and obviously developed appearance with moderately opaque cherry red color with an aged, orange overtone. Quite sweet-toned, somewhat funky and rather tertiary nose with aromas of wizened dark fruits, some leathery brett character, a little bit of volatile nail polish character,a hint of pruney fruit and a touch of dried dates. I thought this was an older Rioja red based on its attractively leathery, bretty character. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and quite crunchy on the palate with flavors of ripe and wizened dark fruits, some bretty leather, a little bit of peppery spice, light cranberry tones, a hint of dried figs and a touch of sour cherry bitterness. A touch of vanilla lingers in the background, but it's more of a bretty than oaky tone. The wine is nicely structured with its moderately acid-driven character, although there is some tannic grip still left in the wine as well. The finish is lively, slightly grippy and quite tertiary with lengthy, dry flavors of leather, some wizened dark berries, a little bit of peppery spice, a hint of stable floor funk and a touch of sour cherry.

A beautiful, complex and wonderfully developed Moulin-à-Vent with a quite noticeable and pretty funky brett character that made me automatically think of a Rioja red - from a cooler vintage, based on the lighter and drier style of the wine. Well, it turns out that I was not even close, seeing it was a Cru Beaujolais, not anything even remotely Spanish. Nevertheless, this is an impressive and hands-down delicious example of Moulin-à-Vent and a perfect example how the best vintages can not only survive, but also develop for more than two decades! Spectacular stuff, highly recommended.
