June 17, 2023 - Very youthful and seriously impressive. Loads of dark currant fruit, ample structure, nice acidity, and a solid finish. I drank this over 4 days and it was still going strong on day 4. 93+

April 7, 2023 - Good Friday dinner: Has settled down since the last time I tried this. Still obviously glossy and primary, but the wine is more integrated with the purple, cassis fruit being at the forefront rather than the polished veneer. More optimistic about the wine's trajectory now.

March 8, 2023 - After a flawed bottle in January I was anxious to try another. This one was as it should have been.

Very tight on opening, which decanting didn't help - in fact it took another three days (a couple of little pours, then recorking with a Vacuvac equivalent) for it to really reveal itself.

Quite slick and polished, with the fine silkiness that the Cuvée JG normally has. The nose is still quite reticent, but interesting notes of deep blackcurrant and black cherry, with some nut and still a little oak. Once the tannins had died down, quite an intense mouthful of cassis, very Pauillac in style, with a searing streak of black cherry, morphing into redcurrant and cranberry on the finish. The oak is not fully integrated yet but it didn't really bother me unduly.

Very much a work in progress - my score is a prediction - in terms of drinking pleasure now, more like 90, but I wouldn't bother opening one for at least another five years.

Tasted alongside the 2006, the 2005 is clearly superior, but I'm not sure it will reach the same heights as the 96, 00 and 01s.

BTW - unlike what Keith writes in his excellent note from a few years back, this is not in fact 100% CS - that was the 2010. This one is 58% CS, 34% M and 8% CF (I checked with SM direct).

January 8, 2023 - Probably just an off bottle - this suffered from a large dollop of VA, which gave it very sharp red cherry flavours, totally weird for a SM. Stripping away the VA was difficult, but I could taste a much more normal, grounded wine in the background. So I'm not unduly worried.

August 21, 2021 - My first Soldera: Made from the best barrels each year. This came across as a large-scaled wine - rather plummy and oaky, almost new world-like. Became a little more classic left bank Bordeaux with air but at the moment it comes across as trying too hard, not an easy drink at this stage of its life. Better on second day with more typicity.
