Deilig vin santo.

May 1, 2017 - Wine tasting in Greece; 4/28/2017-5/6/2017 (Athens, Santorini and Porto Heli): Tasting visit to Gaia winery. Wow these Santorini Vinsantos are really tasty. Color is dark brown cola. On the nose lots going on - caramel, honey, floral and herbal. On the palate sweetbut loads of acid to keep it balanced, toasted nuts, caramel, lemon, some coffee on the finish. Just a bit of heat from the alcohol on the finish. Really delicious.

January 21, 2017 - Dark brown in colour, dense yet glossy wine. Rich, nutty, light raisin feel intermixed with chocolate feel and we guess a bit of new oak was used here in its 10yrs of barrel ageing. Rich yet supple on the palate, well round and inviting, touch of oxidation. Very solid 91

July 25, 2016 - A blend of Assyrtiko (80%), Aidani (10%) and Athiri (10%). Half of the grapes are sun dried, half are dried in the shade, in order to preserve some of the grapes' freshness and save them from oxidation. After pressing the wine is aged around 10 years in oak barrels previously used for oak-fermented Thalassitis. Approx. 200 g/l RS, 13,5% alc. Only 2,500 bottles annually made.

Clear, somewhat translucent, dark mahogany brown color. Very complex, sweet and unctuous nose with rich and developed aromas of chocolate, gingerbread spice, pronounced VA (think about nail polish, balsamico and Rodenbach beer), mocha, golden raisins, some nuttiness, a hint of oxidative rancio and a whiff of burnt sugar. The wine is full-bodied, very sweet and rich in the mouth with intense flavors of sweet latte and mocha, caramel, burnt sugar and syrup, gingerbread spice, dried dates, some sweet sugar-coated lemon, a little raisin, a hint of spicy fruit cake and a touch of balsamico. Despite its remarkable residual sugar levels, the acidity cuts nicely through, making the wine come across surprisingly fresh and not sticky. Extremely long and complex finish with some stickiness and intense flavors of dark syrup and molasses, lemon marmalade, some milk chocolate, notes of apple jam, a little mocha, a hint of Assyrtiko's saline minerality and a faint touch of volatile complexity.

A remarkable, surprisingly fresh and vibrant Vinsanto with lots of body and oomph. The VA characteristics of the wine might scare off some of the wine purists, but in my books the slightly balsamic vinegar notes blend in wonderfully with the syrupy and raisiny notes, giving the wine wonderful depth and complexity. Also, despite all its sweetness, the wine is wonderfully fresh and light, making it a wonderful treat on its own, but also giving it lots of versatility with different kinds of desserts. Stylistically a bit more modern expression of Vinsanto, but taste-wise as traditional Vinsanto as any. Priced according to its quality at 35€ (50 cl bottle) at the winery, highly recommended.

October 4, 2015 - Deep amber colour. Pronounced intensity nose with a romas of cedar, nail varnish remover, prunes, raisin, honey and peach jam.

It is sweet with a medium acidity. It is full-bodied with very pronounced flavours and a long finish.

It is an outstanding quality wine. It has a great concentration and a lingering finish, it shows some complexity as well.
