March 27, 2015 - My Birthday Dinner (Pierre Restaurant, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Central, Hong Kong): Opened a couple of hours before serving but not decanted, which was a mistake.......I think this wine needs an 8-hour decant or another 10 years in the bottle. Totally opaque red/purple coloue just opening slightly at the edges. Nose is deep-noted and powerful black and red cherry fruit, vanilla cream, shoe leather and a monolithic linearity and power like a Bordeaux First Growth.: alluring - it pulls you in to depths and then more depths but without giving much back. Palate is pinpoint fresh acidic attack, smoked bacon, cherry stone pitt. lots of tannin. Light and tight.....it needs a lot of time to open in the glass, frankly more than an evening! High-toned. Enormous growling reverberance and power. Too young......in the same way that a 1959 Ch. Mouton is too young. No-one could believe that this wine is over 70 years old....what a treat for my birthday.

October 15, 2013 - Not a patch on the bottle a fortnight ago, maybe because it followed the Bachelet Charmes. It came over as very ripe, verging on pongy, in fact like a very good 80s gran reserve

April 27, 2006 - One of the finest bottles of wine I have ever had. Sure its pretty easy to get seduced by a wine you've opened that's 64 years old, but even if this were in a blind tasting I would still have loved it. For my taste there is nothing better than a aged Rioja. It somehow combines the characteristics of a Barolo (dense, rich, full-bodied, complex, and earthy with flavors of truffles, violets, fruit, licorice) with a Red Burgundy (undergrowths, truffles, soil, fruits such as blackcurrant/cassis).
Old Riojas are just wonderful and extremely food friendly.
Most remarably about this 1942 R. Lopez de Heredia Bosconia is that the Bodega released it last year!..
I know a lot a Spanish wines have suffered poor storage and shippment, but not this Bosconia.
Very expensive but very memorable.
A great wine made by one of the last makers of traditional non- fruit forward Riojas.1 person found this helpful Comment
