January 8, 2020 - A little disappointing relative to expectations. Tasted exactly like an older high end Bordeaux...still a little tight and young but a lot of the flavor complexity is gone and is more subtle. Sour cherry rhubarb with a little bit of tobacco and leather. Elegant and linear but a little light on finish.

December 27, 2019 - This opens readily with soft berry nose and beautifully balanced palate, round mouthful of stone fruit with mild persistence but firm tannins and paired well with a rich Cassoulet. Still drinking well but needs to be drunk up soon. Tasted with 2000 Dominus and the styles are very similar.

December 12, 2019 - Brought this to a restaurant and had it decanted. Deep red colour with little sign of ageing. Very smooth and medium bodied. Initially had a somewhat cool and volatile feel but got more body with time. Was a pleasure to drink with no sign of heat, but a little shorter than expected

November 28, 2019 - Decanted one hour before tasting, improved over the subsequent three hours. Clear deep dark garnet color. Initial volatile shoe polish aromas needed more than an hour in the decanter to blow off. But then it was wonderful, with luscious notes of blackberries, black currants, black cherries and their liqueurs, also some blue and red fruit. The fruit was fully ripe with some torrefaction but did not come across as stewed. Along with the fruit were lovely notes of mocha, cardamom, nutmeg, fennel, turned soil, hints of tobacco, earthy mushrooms, and toasted walnuts. Full body, balanced, pleasant acidity providing freshness and structure, noticeable but polished tannins providing nice grip. Outstanding wine with the generous ripe fruit of a Napa cabernet but with the structure and balance of Bordeaux. Fully approachable now with at least an hour in the decanter, and with decades of life ahead.

October 27, 2019 - This is now drinking at its peak, and is an absolutely stunning wine with the potential to stay at this level for the next decade. The previously harsher edges of the tannin have resolved and it is now exquisitely smooth on the palate with a perfect balance. The fruit is now more muted but it is still bursting with plum, cherry, and now also with blueberry and cedar notes. The palate is complex and it has still retained a tannic steeliness, but this is so well integrated and in harmony that it complements the overall experience as only a truly great Bordeaux can. Likewise the finish is faultless; perhaps in a perfect world it could be a little longer. For myself this is the greatest Ducru Beaucaillou of the last half century which is drinking now and is better than the 1982 at its peak.
