Community Tasting Notes 3

November 25, 2018 - Tasted in an Amarone 1997-2007 evening with friends. The entourage of three Cesaris -01, -00, -97 turned out be a bit challenging set. The general feel was big bold monolithic wines even by Amarone standards. One dimensionality was another feature common to the three comrades. All this had - at least up to a point - subdued in the aged -97 but, well, I don't know.

November 24, 2018 - Unlike Cesari Bosan of today, this wine as not labeled as "Valpolicella Classico" nor "Riserva". 15,5% alcohol.

Quite concentrated and only very slightly translucent blackish-red color with a developed maroon hue. Very fragrant, sweet and moderately concentrated nose with rich aromas of boysenberry jam, some prune, a little bit of developed leathery character, light spicy notes of white pepper and allspice, a hint of sweet oak spice and a touch of mocha. The wine is extremely full-bodied, powerful and quite intense on the palate with savory flavors of chocolatey toasty oak, some wizened dark fruits, a little bit of peppery spice, light vanilla tones, developed hints of savory meaty character and a touch of cherry marmalade. The wine is moderately high in acidity and although the tannins feel medium at first, they slowly pile up on the gums. The finish is somewhat grippy, quite warm and rather weighty with developed flavors of mocha oak, vanilla, some dried black cherries, a little bit of pruney dark fruit, light caramelly notes of tawny port, a hint of raisiny fruit and a touch of sweet oak spice.

A rich, rather weighty and quite modern Amarone with some obvious age. At 21 years of age the wine is showing nice aged depth and richness of fruit, but the overall style is still too modern for my taste - even +2 decades has not been enough to mask the heavy-handed oak treatment here. The wine is a pleasant, aged big red wine in its own right, but for an Amarone it is still nothing particularly impressive or interesting. However, in a mini-vertical of three aged Cesari Bosan Amarones, this wine fared better than the rather uninteresting and monolithic vintage 2000. This was a better effort, but not by a particularly wide margin.

April 8, 2017 - Opera Wine 2017 - 100 Great Producers (Verona, Italy): Mature and ready to go. This has aged just splendidly, with the richness and the acidity that I so much love about this vintage of Amarone Classico. I made the mistake of tasting this before many lighter reds, and it took a while for my palate to recover - this is a big and generous wine, full of classic flavors and aromas...but it's a big wine, as I said, and it needs to be served at the right time, with the right foods. Cheese has become, over the years, one of my favorites with these wines, and occasionally, an Osso Bucco - but it becomes a very heavy meal. I'm not so sure of the price, but if it's reasonable to its peers, this is a solid buy, with several good years still ahead. recommended+
