    July 23, 2020 - PnP. ABV 13.5%.

One sniff and you knew this was going to be a good wine. Exotic spices and flowers soaring from the glass. Tannins mostly resolved, sweet and smooth on the palate with just a touch warmth at backend. Good depth and complexity. Just enough acidity to balance out the fading fruits. Cedars and spices lingering at finish, very nice. Reached plateau and no hurry to consume, but wouldn’t expect much upside from here. This might be the first bottle of fine wine I ever bought, picked this up from duty free shop at Perth airport years ago for A$99!

July 18, 2020 - Over the hill. Tired, bruised and faded fruit, dirty, no acid, no tannin. Glimpses of rustic Cabernet, but pretty lame.

July 2, 2020 - No sign of this wine fading yet, and feeling lucky to have one more left.
Delicate floral perfumed nose, and and again delicate, but distinct and clear palette that evolved over a couple of hours from berry fruits to reveal even hints of licorice. Soft integrated tannins. Could be at its prime at 31 years in the bottle. Compared over dinner with a 98 magnum, a much more powerful wine that will develop for many years yet.

The ‘89 the last to be bottled as a Grange “Hermitage”

October 14, 2019 - NobleRottersSydney - meant to be Grange (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): [Kim] {cork, 13.5%} The 89 SA vintage gets a lot of stick and deserves it, but here’s the thing; the 89 Grange is a great wine. Not typically Grange, but great in its own right. Yet again, this is brilliant, with wild red, almost tropical jammy fruit. Exotic spice, integrated oak (amongst the least oaky Granges, surely), plummy sweetness, low powdery tannins, medium/high acidity giving it a lively presence. Medium long finish, a tour-de-force of spiced ripe fruits and tangy structure of sweet oak remnants. Always a treat and as good as ever, despite the vintage. Drink up and enjoy!
