May 9, 2016 - Philipponnat is one of my favorite producers, but I didn't imagine that the Coteaux Champenois too could be that good!
This one is made from Pinot Noir grown on Clos de Goisses: when they make the red wine for their rosé champagne there is always some of it unused and if the vintage is particularly good they age it in big foudres for 2 years and sell it.
Maybe it is the vintage, maybe the global warming, but this 2012 didn't taste unripe at all, on the contrary it was on par with the best Bourgogne Pinot Noirs: intense, with well defined aromas of red fruit, source cherry, raspberry, but very precise, very fresh and pleasant, enriched with spices, especially cinnamon.
Medium body and medium + acidity, but the flavours are not unripe and there is no green bitterness, the spices and red berries comes back on the palate, especially the sour cherry, but also cranberry, red plum, strawberry. There is a great definition and tension and the wine is balanced enough to be drank by itself. Medium fine tannins and medium + length. Great.
