June 21, 2021 - Balanced now. It’s not as showy as silver eagle, but the balance was seriously good now. Overall, Silver eagle should be the flagship, Lancel creek is the most balanced one, and Frei Road is the one chasing after these two single vineyards.

April 26, 2020 - Yeah Baby! This is fantastic juice. Checks all the boxes for CA Chard.

March 21, 2020 - See my previous tasting note for this bottling. Quite similar, although the additional bottle age has given this a bit more elegance and less flamboyance (relative to its more youthful drinking).

March 12, 2019 - This was SO good. I am a bit shocked I liked this - and that I liked it SO much. I am often put off by big CA Chards. I am rather sensitive to oak. And yet... I found this simply irresistible. The nose was truly intoxicating. Oak was noticeable for sure, but somehow I was not bothered by it at all. The fruit managed to balance out the oak. On top of buttered popcorn (which I typically hate), there was pineapple (not only ripe, but perhaps even roasted or grilled), yellow apple, orange marmalade, apricot marmalade, orange blossom. The palate was similiar, but with a good amount of Meyer lemon added into the mix. Excellent acidity - so this was never cloying, despite its undeniable exhuberance. I kept smacking my lips and going for more and more. Never would I have imagined I could like a wine like this so much. Thankful for the experience. Surprised at how a wine like this could enthrall me so much.

November 30, 2018 - This juice is absolutely fantastic. Served at slightly below room temperature, it pours a light, straw golden color with very long legs, no doubt because of the high alcohol content in the wine. On the nose, the bouquet is quite fragrant, but there is a restraint to it to keep it from being an overpowering oak fiend. The nose consists of marmalade, sugarcane water, buttered popcorn, caramel, roasted pineapples and wet stones. The nose really reminds me of a "hotter" version of a Corton-Charlie. On the palate, the wine is svelte, textured and effortless. While acidity is somewhat low, there are enough minerals to cut through the alcohol, fat (butter) and toasty oak. This allows the tropical fruits, citrus, white flowers and herbal aromatics to shine through. Surprisingly, despite the high ABV (14.8%!), the wine does not display any alcoholic heat. Finish is long, lingering, light and ephemeral. The wine ends with a toasted marshmallows and lemon curd. The pedigree from Marcassin certainly shows in Ferren's wines. What I liked behind this is the delicate balance between extraction, fruit and oak. I would take these Burgundian-styled chardonnays over Aubert's single vineyards any day.
