September 24, 2017 - I often find the wines of La Clape overly meaty and overly funky, the fruit breaking down quickly in the open. But this one's different, and it may very well be textbook La Clape -- and characteristically Languedoc. From a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Carignan, and 20% Mourvèdre, there is blackberry, blackcurrant, and cherry, all ripe and dark, and this fruit actually lasts, offering an initial burst but then moving into a complementary role alongside cured meat, black pepper, licorice, buttercream (the texture is creamy as well), minerals, and, of course, garrigue, including tarragon and a remarkable note of thyme on the palate. The acidity and fine tannins point to structure and balance, and to short-term aging potential even if it's drinking nicely now, and there's impressive complexity, as it works well on its own but even better with food. If there's a major shortcoming, keeping it short of 90, it's that both depth and length are lacking, but we're talking about a roughly $20 (in Canada) wine here. And it's an honest, authentic wine that delivers.
