July 21, 2023 - Medium dark gold color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. It's been a long 7 years since my last bottle. It seems like forever that it's been in the mix at the annual Party on the Lake/Prairie and there were enough other wines it didn't get popped. Well finally, tonight, my last one. Drinking beautifully still; fusil, golden apple, ripe peach, apple blossoms, citrus, juicy, pineapple, slate and great acid still . Supe bottle . 92× to 93pts.

    November 6, 2020 - Correct. Tasty.
    But slightly shy and uninspiring.

May 28, 2019 - Dinner at MingHin (Chicago, IL): #10-06, 9% abv. The nose shows a little bit of reduction here, but it's mostly in check, supplemented with some sweet fruit. The palate is also fairly nondescript; this is a fine drinking riesling, but it doesn't feel like there's anything much else there. It's not overly sweet, but the acids aren't quite there either.

June 3, 2017 - From a pure drinkability standpoint, this is outstanding. It's maybe a touch soft for my preferences, but it's slurpable. There is a wealth of tropical fruit and ripe peach, and some hints of citrus and herb.

What this lacks for me is any sense of Saar-ness. As I have found with many 2005s, the ripe tropical fruit overwhelms any sense of site or even region. Saar wines taste like middle-Mosel wines, taste like Nahe wine, taste like Rheingau wines. They are certainly fun to drink, but they don't engage my intellect.

Maybe 10 more years of age will expose a bit more of the bones, and bring some differentiation.

July 15, 2016 - POTP (Party on the Peninsula); 7/14/2016-7/17/2016 (Door County, WI): Light medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was second to the last bottle, and they have served me well. Tonight, this bottle seemed a bit flabby after the Selbach Spat we had first. It also was shrouded in a heavy cloak of fusil that didn't sit as well with a bit of a headache already. Lots of fusil, apricot, fatter, minerality, oily and full bodied. Maybe this was me a bit, but not quite up the previous bottles, though I heard no complaints from the crowd.

(Von Hovel Oberemeller Hutte Spatlese) This was in a very good place and showed the clean, pure botrytis of the vintage. The texture was like icing on a cake which made this very easily drinkable. Nose of cooling minerality and somewhat tropical guava and kiwi fruit. Opulent and just enough buffering acidity. A classic 2005.

(Von Hovel Oberemeller Hutte Spatlese) Creamy nose with stone fruits and very high toned. Wonderful palate with oodles of yellow fruits and lots of richness. Lip-smackingly delicious due to the wonderful acidity. Great sweet/sour interplay on the finish.
