November 17, 2023 - Raspberry seed, leather, earthy funk, and a bit of haunted house closet dust make for a Las Cases that seems a bit older than its vintage would indicate. The initial pull was a bit balled up, but it relaxed after an hour or so…kinda…
I experienced a push-pull of expansion here, with the tertiary flavors seemingly clamping down on the fruit, but then scurrying away to allow some interesting macerated black cherry notes poke through. Finishes somewhat angular, with a tannic element creeping up in the back end. A wine yearning for food pairing.
There’s part of me that feels like this is past its prime, but another part of me wonders if this just needs to smooth out its edges over the next 5+ years and see what becomes if it. For my palate, I’d like a little more fruit intensity to balance out the other elements. Score higher if you are more a friend to the funkafied. I know diehard fans will say I need to revisit this in 2040. I’ll leave that in others’ capable hands. Enjoy!5 people found this helpful Comments (7) -

November 6, 2023 - Very dense with leather blackberry and black cherry flavors. Quite tannic upon opening. Decanted for an hour and it needed a little more. By the end of the meal it had opened up magnificently. Next time I will decant earlier. Will be perfect in 10 years. Hope I make it.

August 19, 2023 - Great notes by fellow wine lovers below. Very on point.
My notes:
Color: dark, almost purple like. Still very youthful in appearance with no noticeable bricking.
Nose: VERY discreet at first (and as we’ll note, throughout). There’s no barnyard here, instead it’s a cool mist with minor spruce and cedar. Hints of cherries and milk chocolate.
Mouth/pallet: there’s some bite happening on the attack, but a soft and silky texture overall.
Finish: this is where it’s all happening, with cherries and again chocolate coming across with a long lingering finish. Extremely soft and velvety smooth.
Overall, this seems to be a serious wine, with very discreet notes, but the soft texture and long lingering finish make it most intriguing. Very feminine in style, it’s definitely a “fine” wine, drinking superbly with melted tannins, good on its own or with food. I’m just not sure I like this style (not complex enough, not enough overall muscle). 94 for me.

August 6, 2023 - From the generally serious, sometimes surly, and always unhurried-to-evolve 2005 vintage, it shouldn't surprise that the Leoville Las Cases remains youthful. What does surprise me a bit is that, with a couple hours of air, this is actually pretty approachable with a typically-LLC frutti di bosco, potpourri character rising to overshadow the nori, pencil, and black coffee notes present at the outset. Further surprising is the civility of the tannins - this isn’t a punishing wine to drink. While this isn’t quite ready, it isn’t decades away from drinking, either. Another 5 years should find the 2005 Léoville Las Cases in a very good place, from which point it should cruise effortlessly for decades - likely in the 96-98 range.
The assemblage here is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc with 13.15% ABV, pH 3.58, IPT 71 (for what that’s worth).7 people found this helpful Comment

4/30/2009 (link)(LEOVILLE LAS CASES) Spatlese/L'Ermita/Leoville Las Cases Dear Friends, Parcels continue to arrive in the warehouse (this is the season for deliveries to us as well as to you) so here you go - fresh off the boat. All have just arrived with impeccable provenance (this is not a pre-arrival): 2007 Selbach-Oster Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spètlese EXTREMELY LIMITED Delightful, pungent and full flavored for a 2007 - a wine with a long life ahead of it - should age very well, up to 15-20 years. An outright bargain for 2007 Spatlese. 2005 Leoville Las Cases 1.5lt(WS100) This set of magnums is directly from Bordeaux - it is as close to cellar-direct as I can muster. 2005 Soufrandiere Pouilly-Vinzelles "Les Quarts" (BH90-92 - Outstanding!) - as good as it gets in the Macon? 2002 Palacios L'Ermita (Priorat) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA spain9876 burg3498 bord4599 germ4788

11/15/2008 (link)(Leoville Las Cases) Piano Dear Friends, Two interesting magnums (that did not wine Wine of the Year) to round out the week - both of these are directly from the source with perfect provenance. The Valdicava is exceedingly rare in this format and the Las Cases should continue to increase in value for decades... Have a good weekend everyone - Both are EXTREMELY LIMITED at this price: 2001 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva "Madonna del Piano" 1.5lt 2005 Leoville Las Cases 1.5lt (St. Julien) Both arrive at some point in late 2008/early 2009 (they are on the water now) - they will be available for local pick up soon thereafter and ship during the first available shipping window (weather permitting). Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy8801 Bord9131
