April 6, 2023 - Pop’N’Pour, ruby red colour, smells of sour cherry, elderberry and a little bit of smoke, has a little bit of residual sugar, so not completely dry, smooth in the mouth, medium body, in the mouth elderberry and sour cherry, has a little bit of acidity as well, in the aftertaste acidity, sour cherry and elderberry, good length (30 sec), good pinot noir but not “mind-blowing”.

March 19, 2022 - D+0h: no deposit in the filter nor in the bottle, smells of cherry and elderberry D+4h: ruby red colour, smells of smoke, cherry and elderberry, smooth in the mouth, medium body, has a little bit of residual sugar, so not completely dry, in the mouth cherry and elderberry with a little bit of smoke in the background, in the aftertaste cherry, elderberry and acidity, good length (30 sec), good pinot noir.

May 16, 2020 - A very earthy, savoury wine. Nose of roast duck, molasses, cherry, and dried herbs. Palate shows strong, sour acidity backed by fine, firm tannins. Flavour has lots of savoury earth character, plus intense notes of red wine vinegar and dried red fruit.

October 30, 2017 - Had the 2012 Alte Reben Spätburgunder (cost 28 EUR) from Huber a while ago and that was quite some beauty.

The wine tasted now is 2013 – a vintage at least as good as 2012 – but one level lower, called simply Malterdinger Spätburgunder, price point still 18 EUR.

And I have to say that this was a much, much simpler quality. Basic pinot noir with some pinot typicity, OK-ish acids, but nothing to balance them; only two-dimensional (if not one), lacking depth. Also I got a bit of milk chocolate aroma which was not really integrated into the wider picture.

Opened up and became better with time, but even so my group was not impressed and I had to agree. Even in the German base pinot noir world, there are (much) better efforts than this, e.g. Friedrich Becker’s 2013 springs to mind which costs half of this and wipes the floor with it.

    Cannot recommend.

June 4, 2017 - Lovely nose of undergrowth, decomposing autumn leaves, dried cranberry, redcurrant. Nice acidity and gentle grip on a medium-weight palate of those savoury flavours. Comparison with Burgundy is inevitable, and this is just so savoury and devoid of any of the modern ripeness/sweetness/oakiness that plagues many Burgundies
