August 28, 2022 - My initial rating 2 years ago was 90 (see notes below), but the freshness has fallen off and now it's definitely fading and turning a tad "muddy". If you have any, drink it up!

(3/29/2020) Arguably, carignan has been the go-to default red wine grape in southern France, much of Spain and California for many years. Why? It yields well and (most importantly) tolerates hot climates. For many years, the saying among California winemakers was that the best Pinot Noirs had the most carignan in the blend because of its color and backbone, which Pinot Noir often lacks.

In the last 30 years or so, the French and Californians have pulled their carignan vines in favor of more popular red varietals like cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah and pinot noir — even tho the latter grows best in much cooler conditions than carignan.

This wine is an accurate rendition of the varietal, which is usually hard to identify due to its neutral "red wine" flavors. The label states "Old Vines", but that terminology has not been defined by the BATF. However, since no one in California has planted new vineyards of carignan since perhaps 1970, this is probably from vines 50 years or older.

Apparently, this is the last vintage of Seghesio Carignane, since the winery was sold to Crimson Wine Group in 2011, and for marketing purposes, I'm sure, they discontinued the varietal.

April 5, 2021 - Good. This evolved into a very nice wine. Dusty dry, notes of prunes shine through the grapes. Delicious.

January 24, 2021 - This particular bottle was a bit above the previous bottles that I have had. It has aged well over the eight years and is velvety with a still tight tannin on the middle and back. This bottle was all about integration, from grape flavors, to acid and all the way through the tannin. A great buy at $11

February 17, 2020 - Takes a few minutes to open up but very delicious. This has aged well and the structure is still strong.
