December 9, 2023 - Funky, classic old Bordeaux. Not a ton of fruit hanging on, tannins mostly resolved with acidity dominating the palate. Drank 1/2 PNP and let the rest of the bottle sit overnight. Blew off the funk overnight and the finish was longer but not much in the way of improvement. I love old wines, even if they aren't singing, always an education.

November 5, 2023 - Vinetasters: Old Cabernet (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Dark fruit and structural, especially for a wine of this age. Shows relatively young fruit, but still plenty of tannin. With air, this might have shown a bit of a TCA bloom, but my note here reflects my initial impression of the wine. My 10th, group's 11th.

April 12, 2023 - I wanted to drink a benchmark-year in the family, wine. So I did. However, I wish I would have left it open for 2 hours before the 1st sip, because the last sip came at abut 2 and a 1/2 hours, and it was by far the best. Makes me wonder if the score would have been higher had I started it then... It opened old, dusty and not in a good way. I just needed to give it time. No bitey tannin, that was all smoothed out. Some fruit left, but mostly cool tertiary flavors.

I used a fork instead of a corkscrew, but the fork just pushed the cork right into the bottle anyway, as it was so deteriorated.

Anyway, it was a fun experience and the oldest beverage I've had, to date...

Certainly not getting any better at this point.

December 22, 2022 - Dinner with Dad: Aged Napa, Bordeaux & Don Saunders (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Dark red color, 12mm bricked edge. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes plus. Yes, there was a little bottle stank on pouring this, but it came around nicely after about 20 minutes in glass. This was a fully mature, medium bodied, classically style old school Bordeaux, cassis, raspberry, leather and tobacco leaf with some largely resolved, yet still lingering tannins. Always a joy to drink and appreciate these 50+ year old wines.
