Community Tasting Notes 95

May 4, 2024 - Good wine, but overly sweet. Very earthy on the nose and on the palate, but then the sweetness comes through, which made it less enjoyable.

April 11, 2024 - I can hardly believe that this wine hasn't matured at all in the last 3 years and remains stubbornly backward and tannic. 6th bottle from a case bought en primeur. Good nose of blackcurrant, oak, and liquorice. The body is holding up better than I feared and as well as could be hoped for. Excellent complexity. Lovely long finish and aroma of hot tiles in the empty glass. Old fashioned style. Served blind I would put this in St Estephe, so its quite atypical for St Julien. I'll wait another 3+ years before trying another.

March 9, 2024 - Two plus hours in the decanter.

A dusty nose of blackcurrant, mint, cedar wood, tobacco and spice.

A fairly evolved palate of blackcurrant, plum, with red fruits in the mid palate and then the wood spice, cedar and tobacco. Mediun evolved tannins with good acidity.

Everything is in place and it’s an enjoyable wine. But it lacks a bit of definition and structure coming across as slightly muddied without the framework and precision that would allow the different components to shine.

So 91 from me. ready to drink, and while there’s no hurry, the soft fruits and tannins suggest that it won’t gain a huge amount from laying down more than 5 years.

January 4, 2024 - I didn't decant which was probably a mistake as tannins were too harsh for my taste even after a couple of hours in the bottle. Nevertheless I would give this a few more years to mellow out before opening another one.

December 29, 2023 - Initially quite reticent upon opening, but settled in nicely after decanting 3-4hrs. Very structured, old school claret, probably just entering a long drinking window. No harm in popping a bottle now if you have a few, but I feel like it's best days are still to come.
