December 15, 2023 - Third of 3 (I’d hoped to make it a year with this lot, but it wasn’t meant to be), and pretty much Ibid everything in my May TN. I probably should have read that before popping, as I reiterate that this really needs a couple of hours to show at its best, then show at its best it does, even getting incrementally better on night #2. I’m extending my drinking window by a year, but that it still needs a decent amount of air and held up so well makes me think I’m being conservative here. If I’m not quite a buyer at the current Wine Searcher price, I’d at least go a good bit above what I paid, and other vintages of this are definitely on my radar. Right there with the Aubert Lauren with the best chard from these shores, and while I speak less confidently of other climes, I suspect anywhere else. Returning from the Maui wine desert (yeah, I know: my CT friends would have airlifted a palate of Montrachets and Harlans, but not my world) where I limited myself to beer and cocktails—God, how I hate that my wine drinking passion has ruined me for mediocre bottles—I wanted to make this a splash; this is pretty much of a tidal wave. Reiterate 97-98 if scoring.

July 12, 2023 - I am not a big fan of chardonnay, but used to be on Morlet's mailing list and purchased this wine due to its stellar reviews. I will have to admit, I liked this chardonnay: velvety aromas of lemon, honey and a hint of apple. The palette initially was strong on citrus, however with time it changed to being more buttery with minerals and a hint of lemon and an almost viscuous mouthfeel.

May 8, 2023 - First of 3 ($102@) from a recent auction purchase. On the nose and palate, potent notes of green apples, pears, marzipan, jasmine, river rocks, lemon meringue and on the back end, preserved orange peel, providing tang, savoriness, length and refreshing tartness. Deep gold, full bodied, medium to full legs. Medium+ acidity, well balanced and still very present, no heat. Excellent complexity, persistence and intensity. Last week seemed to be Morlet CdC week on my favorite auction website, and while I bid on virtually all, this was the one I got (did it help that it was cheapest? Hmm, not telling.). I was a bit scared by the last TN, but this remains a rousing pour which comes to its best form with 90 minutes-2 hours of air and coming up to a cool room temperature (60-62). Reiterate big thanks to CT pal csimm for introducing me to this cuvee via the ‘16 edition, which like most things with csimm and wine, is perhaps the best of what I suspect a murderer’s row of vintages. This edition, whether because it was further from the vintage date or perhaps the relative softness of ‘14 vs. ‘16, was rounder and richer, especially out of the bottle, and not quite as well etched, but with time, the backbone really came out, and has held immaculately over 3 nights. This was unsurprisingly great as a solo sipper, but it stunned with crab macaroni and cheese (the richness complementing my ridiculous amount of good cheese in the dish), but a bit more surprisingly, with night #2 octopus Bolognese, with the savory orange peel notes really working with the sauce and forming an interesting contrast with the Canalicchio BdM I poured with it on night #1. While I wouldn’t go letting this grow too many cobwebs, I’m more with jsmorris than ken in thinking that while this is likely at peak, it’s not going downhill anytime soon (estimated drinking date for the other 2 bottles, if you’re interested, 12-18 months). While I’ve not had Konsgaard (unless you count the second label The Farm, from this vintage last summer, which wasn’t holding up as well) nor the Marcassin chards, this really is an American (and hey, let’s say it, Californian) premier cru, standing proudly with the best of Aubert and, IMO, above, Kistler, PM and whatever else, hanging well with Cortons, Montrachets and Meursaults as chard royalty. Just killer. 97-98
