January 10, 2020 - Superbe vin.

December 6, 2016 - Purchased 6 bottles blindly based on the the fact that Antoine Foucault is the son and nephew of the legendary Foucault wine makers at Clos Rougeard. Also we love Chenin Blanc produced in this area, including Chinon, Savennières, Vouvray, and of course last but not least Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant.

When I brought this home, I ran for my Coravin and released a tasting pour into the glass. My wife (who is the more passionate Chenin Blanc lover) and my assessment was this was a special wine, beyond our wildest expectations. It was rich but well balanced with great minerality and acidity. Chenin Blanc is such a wonder, in my humble opinion, taking on varying characteristics on terrior, but also being stylistically a little different from vintage to vintage. The closest comparison I can make to this wine is Baumard Savennières Trie Spéciale which is always a great wine, but from year to year can be very stylistically different. The last vintage of the Trie Spéciale I bought of that wine is 2010 which is a little unbalanced at 14% alcohol, but still a great wine.

100% Bio Chenin Blanc from single vineyard, Le Charpentrie, on the hillside of Breze. Indigenous yeast used to ferment in barrels. Aged 24 to 36 months with no racking in cold, underground cellar in a mixture of new and old barriques, and used Founders.

    From and About the producer

After working with his father and uncle at Clos Rougeard for 4 years, in 1999 , then 26 year old Antoine Foucault and his companion Caroline Boireau created the Domaine du Collier in 1999. Today they have almost 7 hectares of vines and produce about 1250 cases of wine per year. Most of the old vinyards (including some 100 year old vines)are planted in Chenin Blanc on the hillsides of Brézé with only a third of the domaine in Cabernet Franc. Antoine works the vineyards organically and does not use any chemical fertilizers or weedkillers. The soils are worked to send the roots down into the tuffeau; harvest is by hand with severe sorting,;fermentation with natural yeasts in barrel; and long ageing (24 to 36 months without racking) in a cold underground cellar in younger barrels (some new for la Charpentrie) and, since 2010, some Stockinger foudres. The Revue du Vin de France decribes the whites as "dry and very ripe, and reveal themselves to be full of life and power...La Charpentrie red rivals the rare Champignys of terroir". In the Spring 2014 issue of Le Rouge & le Blanc, the Collier Charpentrie blanc 2010 was the second highest rated wine, just behind the Clos Rougeard. They wrote, "Superb nose, complex and charming...the attack in the mouth is of a rare volume without lacking delicacy and precision. ...this cuvée transcends the variety and expresses the calcaire of Brézé...The majority of tasters delighted in the power, mineral and aerian character of this great chenin."
