December 22, 2023 - Was excited for my first experience from such an esteemed producer and was in the mood for smooth qualities offered by Pomerol. Unfortunately I found this rather angular, dominated by a pencil shaving character and a little herbal. Perhaps a longer decant? Maybe a few more years will allow for better integration of the elements and, or, for me to become a better taster…because yet again I seem to be drinking a different wine to the reviewers.

June 19, 2023 - First one of these in more than four years. It has definitely evolved in the right direction since then. A pretty, translucent magenta in color. Attractive, complex scents of crushed dark fruits, spice and violets on the nose. Medium-bodied and silky in texture, this is very elegant and harmonious. Has softened noticeably - not nearly as piercingly tart now. The 50% Cabernet Franc in the blend for this vintage is no longer quite as evident. Still showing excellent depth and intensity to its tangy plum, raspberry and dark currant fruit. Finishes with deceptive length and lingering notes of mint, mineral and black tea. So refined and enjoyable. A beautiful expression of Pomerol. Perhaps the best second wine in Bordeaux.

April 15, 2023 - Delightfully fruity and fragrant. Red cherries, pomegranate and briars with graphite and damp forest tones. Medium bodied with lovely fine tannins and a great finish. Ready to drink now or the next 5 years.

March 13, 2023 - In a great spot. Fresh black fruit coupled with cigar box and graphite. Generous, but not overdone. Drink now and over the next ten years.

November 13, 2021 - Nose: [59°] Fresh scent of pomegranate, cranberry skins and bright red cherries. This quickly gives way to damp forest floor with an undercurrent of fresh, ripe plums and blackberries. Green and dark leafy undergrowth and damp tree bark. [62°] With some time and as this comes to room temp, aromas become more focused on deep earth and undergrowth.

Palate: [60°-65°] Soil covered stone and bitter minerals, soft damp bark and steeped tea up front. All covered by black and blue fruits. With time, the minerals evolve into graphite and eventually everything blends together turning a bit dark. Has an almost empty mid-palate but dark fresh plums surface on the finish.

Attributes: Clear medium ruby. Dry with medium-plus amounts of fine, chewy tannin. Medium body with medium acidity. Good finish of at least 16-18 seconds.

Thoughts: Very interesting.. amazing aromas and good flavors with great freshness. The freshness is what seems to save this a bit. There is a good attack on the front but this tastes/feels a bit hollow as we come to the mid-palate. Hollow as in imagine cutting a normal sized orange or a pomegranate in half and come to find the flesh/seeds of the fruit, the size of a quarter, dead center in the central column with the remaining cavity around it unfilled. Oddly enough, some fresh plums linger AFTER the finish (and when I say after, I mean there's a long dead silence after the initial finish). I haven't had enough experience to know if time will fill this hollow space I find in the fruits but this is still quite tasty now. Maybe another 2-3 years might help.. hell this might possibly be going into a phase, hard to tell.

Serving notes: Bordeaux glass. Emptied bottle into a decanter at cellar temp ~55° for 1.5 hours before serving, continued to decant while consumed over another 6.5 hours (total 8 hrs). Recommend serving ~64° with a decant of at least 3-4 hours at cellar temp if opening now.
