Community Tasting Notes 3

November 15, 2022 - The Wine Society’s Paulliac, bottled by a mysterious anonymous top quality producer according to the label (which the tasting notes helpfully reveal as Lafite Rothschild), has everything on paper.

Objectively, it ticks a lot of boxes: balance, complexity, intensity and length? Tick, tick, tick, tick. But some of those harder to define (and totally subjective) characteristics that make a special wine are absent for this taster: personality, a sense of place, plain deliciousness. However you cut it though, this is a competent Bordeaux with a decade of bottle age for a very reasonable price.

Over the course of an evening it evolved in the glass. There’’s a lot going on, starting with a pronounced nose of blackcurrant, ripe raspberry, prune and cloves. The oak is nicely integrated, with notes of cedar and smoke, and that bottle age shows itself with leather and chocolate. Full bodied on the palate, the blackcurrant, cedar and chocolate are most prominent with a long finish.

It still has quite some tannic grip and structure, and would be worth revisiting in 3 years or so.

March 8, 2021 - Very impressive and great value for the price from wine society. I think this has a number of year left in it and has the brooding power of pauillac with the early tertiary notes in full swing. Hard to beat the value.

February 1, 2021 - Concentrated flavours of black fruits, pencil, leather and peppery spice. Beautiful texture and a long finish. This is drinking beautifully at the moment, although another year or two surely wouldn't hurt.
