September 2, 2023 - Pulled cork 30 minutes before dinner Poured 1/4 glasses to try. I felt it needed a short decant while eating dinner. Drank over the next 45 minutes. Dark black color. Wonderful melding of flavors. Typical StE profile of tobacco, leather, forest floor, licorice & tar. Yummy as always. A bit soft and a bit simple but full. Good not great category.

August 7, 2023 - Belle profondeur de corps. Très bon avec des fromages goûteux. Cacao, cerise et chocolat. Finale sur de la réglisse. Excellent, bu sur 2h avec risotto au fromage bleu et shiitake.

April 9, 2023 - Jeff Leve is correct. This is ready to go. No decant. Poured 1/2 glasses 20 minutes before dinner. Earth, forest floor, chocolate, burnt cherry, tobacco, leather…All the StE descriptors. Medium/full bodied. Not a shy wine at all. Lots of depth and flavor layers. Excellent QPR. Napa need not apply.

March 8, 2023 - Ready to go, this opulent, lush, wine is all about its rich core of salty, chocolate-coated black cherries, smoke, and plums with hints of spice, and licorice in the endnote. No decanting is needed here, just pop, pour, and enjoy. Drink from 2023-2032.

October 15, 2022 - My first ever Chateau Villemaurine, this 2015 is a blend of 80% Merlot with 20% Cab Franc. Thanks to bro LYL for bringing along this bottle!

Black-fruit and hints of violet flowers greets you after a slight barnyard funk dissipates, with ripe black cherry and licorice on the palate. The tannins are still evolving, slightly grippy but not overly so.

On the finish, the oak and vanilla finish is resolved. Aged in 70% new, and 30% 1-year old oak barrels, for 16 months.

Chateau Villemaurine is located close to the amazing Saint Emilion village. It seems that back in the 8th century, invaders made an encampment on the land where this property is located today. The camp was called Ville Maure, which translates to "City of the Moors".

In June 2007 it was purchased by Justin Onclin, who went on toe modernise the estate including new cellars and the introduction of temperature-controller smaller vats.

These low capacity vats allow for parcels to be vinified one at a time. First, the consultation of the estate was done by Stephane Derenoncourt. He was then replaced in a few years by Hubert de Bouard (Chateau Angelus), who greatly improved the quality of the modern wines.

Drink with LYL at my home, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - 15 Oct 2022
