Community Tasting Notes 2

June 21, 2017 - The grapes aren't sourced from either one of the famous Pelješac vineyards (Postup or Dingač) but still close by. 15% alcohol.

Developed figgy-tawny color with a slightly raisiny-brown rim. Developed, somewhat oxidative and greasy nose with some spicy, acrid VA notes, a little bit of raisiny fruit, a little bit of pruney druit, a hint of wizened blackberries and a touch of smoky oxidative character. Ripe, rich and very full-bodied on the palate with powerful and quite developed flavors of plum jam, juicy pruney fruit, some raisin, a little bit of bitter peppery spice, a hint of overripe strawberry and a touch of aged nuttiness. The wine is medium in acidity with moderate tannins. The finish is long, warm and grippy with somewhat sweet flavors of pruney dark fruits, raisin, some peppery spice, a little bit of developed meaty fruit and a hint of strawberry jam. The tannins pile up and stick a bit out, making the aftertaste quite grippy and a bit astringent.

A big Plavac Mali that has seen too much age - or then just too much oxygen. Of course it might be that the wine wasn't kept in conditions suitable for aging, because AFAIK this wine was sourced from a shop only some weeks before the tasting. Based on my experience on Plavac Mali, these wines should easily withstand much longer aging - 7 years for this variety should be no biggie. Based on these observations, this bottle most likely wasn't representative of the wine. I can imagine a properly cellared bottle will be performing much better. Not worth the 42€.
