April 23, 2019 - Decanted 1 hr. ahead. Garnet color, trending orange at the edge. Nice nose of black cherry, dried herbs, cedar. Medium-bodied and brisk on the palate, with redwood flavors leading over plum and ink. Finishes with light grippy tannins.

January 11, 2018 - P&p; best with 3+ hours of air in the bottle as it gets a bit more expressive and the almost prickly acidity smooths out. Smells like volcano/charred rocky earth/tar and crushed black pepper, with touches of dark flowers, old barrel/old leather, and fleeting cherryish fruit; one of the least primary wines I have smelled in a long time. Fruit is more present on the palate, sort of hawthorn berry/red apple, but still subdued. Peppery, earthy/rocky, dry, tart, savory/leathery/old-woody. Lingering black pepper, actually seeming to intensify in a fairly long finish. Fairly tart acidity, a bit prickly/sharp almost like carbonation. Medium-strength tannins, well integrated. Altogether basically the opposite of hedonistic; severe, yet not austere as it has a lot going on, with an undeniable savory/secondary/tertiary moreishness. Characterful, interesting, and enjoyable wine.

November 19, 2017 - Earthy and dark with some uplifting bramble berry tones running through its center. Overgeneralizing terribly: reminds me most of a dark dusty northern Rhône. Nose is charred meat, tar, overripe berries. Palate is fairly simple purple and blue fruit, pepper, grape stems, and a tad overwhelmed with tannins still. I suspect capable of gathering dust for decades. Recommended.

July 16, 2016 - Has a little brick on the edges, but quite dark and bordering on purple. Very complex smell, with lots of layers: sharp black pepper notes, wax or incense, a little game or sous bois... Really a different profile with every whiff I take. Taste is more predictable, and even lightly fruity, with some dark berry notes. Body is medium, and alcohol content is well hidden. Can feel a bit of acidity, but I wouldn't call it particularly sour.
