Community Tasting Notes 2

May 16, 2009 - This has a quiet nose that slowly opens with air to reveal aromas of lime curd, strawberries, apples and spice. Very light in the mouth with all the clarity and refreshment of Alpine spring water and pure fruit flavours that keep building up with each sip and gentle spice, cream and mineral notes underneath. Wonderful wine to sit down with and explore over dinner, and so easy and refreshing to drink.

January 31, 2006 - I like drinking Merkelbach wines, as they remind me of what good German wine used to be. In these days of rampant ripeness, and spatlese that drinks like beerenauslese, it's nice to have a young-ish auslese that complements a meal. Distinct aromas of starwaberry, apple and stone come with a refreshing, slightly creamy, energetic palate of fruit and minerals. The light weight in the mouth belies the eventual complexity as the wine opens in the glass, revealing more fruit tones and stronger creaminess and minerals. This wine is still young, but drinking very well now.

I would never dare compare this wine with auslese from the "big wine" producers. They make great wines. But this little gem has its own greatness, and that's in being completely drinkable, providing a little added pleasure for a casual evening at home with Laura and the cats.
