Community Tasting Notes 2

June 2, 2008 - Wow -- what a surprise. As indicated by my earlier tasting note, this wine has not been stored in ideal conditions. From 1993 to 1996, it was stored in a tiny beach shack in Manhattan Beach, California. From 1996 to May 2006, it sat in the basement of my old house. Since May 2006, it was been kept in a temperature controlled wine cellar. Here's to the last 2 years, and the longevity of wine. We popped and poured this on a lark tonight to pair with the BBQ'd rack of lamb. There was an initial funk on the nose, and then the magic happened. The color of the wine is young and vibrant. A little fade in the color, but not nearly as much as I expected. No bricking. In the glass, the wine started out smooth and somewhat subdued. After some time, this wine opened up and declared its survival. The wonderful fruit broke through the dust, and the youth emerged from this ill-treated lost child. While the nose stayed pretty mute, the taste of the wine was mellowed raspberry, almost cloud-like in its simplicity. The fruit emerged as the defining characteristic. The fruit was concentrated, the sweetness distilled, and the grape appeared like an apparition. My test of a memorable wine is how quickly the bottle disappears. While the BBQ'd rack of lamb caused us to lick our fingers and feed the fatty scraps to Lily the dog, the wine infused its magic and turned an ordinary Monday into one of those lingering 1st summer nights, holding the promise of an endlessly pure summer.

August 1, 2006 - Given the advanced age of this Pinot Noir, and the fact that it moved with me from state to state in less than ideal conditions, I was surprised to find that this wine aged very well. Light nose, but classic pinot taste. Wine has lightened through age, and as a result, has no heat and a very smooth finish. The finish is not long, but the simplity of the wine is nice. Color was good. Light raspberry color. A very smooth experience. Wine perhaps has maybe a little more time left, but much not much beyond another year or two. Enjoyed with dried strawberries, which paired nicely with the pinot. A nice surprise for a wine drunk simply as an everyday wine.
