July 10, 2016 - Nearly identical light gold color to the Akashi blended whisky. Nose is subtle yet deep. This has exotic wood aromas, with wisps of white pepper, lemongrass and jasmine swirling all around. On the palate this has an intriguing array of woody flavors, clearly showing the range of barrels (sherry, brandy, bourbon, wine, American oak and ex-shochu, according to the importer). This is especially felt at the back of the palate, where the long finish presents an aftertaste of coffee beans and yet more spicy wood. For those that like wood, this is like wandering into a paradisal sylvan grove. Overall this is elegant whiskey, made in the harmonious and balanced Japanese style. A noticeable step-up in quality from the Akashi 40% Blend (tasted alongside; please see my tasting note in CellarTracker).
