Community Tasting Notes 2

November 19, 2016 - Near perfect shape, complete but fragile cork, no seeping, perfect fill just a couple cm low in the neck, good color for age. Translucent pale rube-amber; old cherry kirsch, light cherry skin, had an obvious "thin" aroma to it, slight ethyl acetate note, but with sweet, simple red cherry skin notes; thin on the palate with no tannins left, tangy light fruit still present, kind of juicy on the palate, slight fumey alcohol (or chemical) note apparent (but 12% indicated); medium short finish. Still hanging on and more of a novelty than anything, but fun! They were the first to import French oak barrels in California in 1963, so this was aged in old or large American barrels. My cellar info had this indicated as a 1969, so it was kind of a surprise to have something this old and more historical, pre-Robert Mondavi winery, pre-Heitz, and pre-modern wine making.

(Charles Krug Winery (Peter Mondavi Family) Cabernet Sauvignon) Bricking medium red violet color; mature, aromatic, light cassis, cedar, autumnal, dried mushroom nose; tasty, mature, dried currant, cedar palate with firm, drying tannins; medium-plus finish (fermented in open-top redwood tanks and then aged in redwood tanks of various sizes)
