December 19, 2018 - Good for the price, but not great. Missing the petrol nose and taste.

February 8, 2017 - 100% Riesling from Grand Cru Pfersigberg, although not designated as such. Vinified bone-dry in old oak vats.

Quite deep and concentrated yellow-green color, somewhat deeper and more intensely colored than vintage 2008 that was tasted alongside. The nose feels ripe, concentrated and nuanced with fruit-forward aromas of ripe golden apples, juicy citrus fruits, some peachy tones, a little bit of beeswax and a subtle hint of petrol. Contrasting the typically lean and sharp style of Les Ecaillers, this vintage feels somewhat richer, broader and more fuller-bodied in style - yet still retaining the racy acidity and incisive, steely minerality. There are dry yet ripe, concentrated flavors of tart lemony citrus fruits, ripe golden apples, some peach-driven stone fruits, a little bit of wizened yellow fruit, light petrol tones and a hint of honeycomb. The finish is very long, racy and mineral with slightly leaner flavors of steely minerality, sweet citrus fruits, some apple peel bitterness, a little bit of pithy grapefruit, a hint of petrolly mineral complexity and a touch of fresh, crunchy white fruit.

Normally Les Ecaillers seems to be the raciest and most mineral wine of the Léon Beyer range, but this vintage seems richer, weightier and more concentrated than what is typical of the label - yet the wine hasn't compromised one bit of its mineral, acid-driven style. Tasting it alongside the vintage 2008, this feels noticeably more youthful, somewhat weightier and less complex. Seeing how very slowly the vintage 2008 is aging, I can imagine this wine will become accessible sooner out of these two. However, since this wine has such impressive sense of structure, concentration and balance, I can also imagine this wine will keep for much longer and most likely will turn even better if given enough age. The potential here is huge - there's definitely no need to hurry.
