Community Tasting Notes 11

February 11, 2024 - Jam, pepper, savory notes, terrific finesse and precision. All the right stuff is there, but this bottle seems turned down a notch. Doesn't taste over the hill. Put on a little weight with some air. Very tasty, but pales in comparison to the '14 I had recently.

November 8, 2023 - Grand Jury du Vin - Republic of Georgia; 11/1/2023-11/9/2023 (Republic of Georgia then stopover in Paris and Dijon): Initially shy but opens up quickly. Expressive nose displaying mature bright red fruit, strawberry jam, raspberry, a hint of dry cherry, strong pepper, leather, tobacco, scorched earth, sap, tarragon/Chartreuse and strong mineral. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered bright red fruit, silky and fluid, nice detail and balance, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a long sweet and bright red fruit driven finish with pepper and tarragon at the end. I am thinking between Rayas (red fruit), Chave (pepper) and Clos Rougeard (herb). Kelly mentions a Chignon which I agree. This well stored example is drinking beautifully.

July 6, 2023 - Astoundingly good wine. Raw, floral and earthy aromatics.

December 14, 2019 - (Medlar, London). PnP. Elements of a classic syrah nose, but significantly lighter and strongly the barnyard side of aromas (stinky socks -- very slight hint of brett but not offputting). Black pepper, leather, maybe a bit of sour cherries? Extremely complex and interesting wine, definitely benefited from food. Tannins are ripe and mature. Perhaps missing a bit of acidity on the finish?

May 17, 2019 - Medium body and an intense flavour of ripe dark cherries, dark plums, fresh herbs and flowers such as lavender, geranium and violet. Cloves, figs, cola.
Aromas and flavors, though intense have a short finish. , cloves, figs and cola. Medium tannins. Low acidity.
My first impression was that the wine resembled a wine from Veneto.

N.B. It was previously suggested that Mondeuse noire was identical to the northern Italian wine grape variety Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso due to the similarity of the wines. DNA analysis has shown that this is not the case, and that the two varieties are unrelated.
