November 8, 2023 - an evening of tastings and pairings at mercato with winemaker pietro oddero... this was the penultimate wine in the lineup (alongside the brunate 2018, reg bottling of 2019 barolo and 2019 barbaresco gallina). the meal and wine pairings were carefully curated, and this brunate, which apparently was selected by the winemaker 'to exhibit a barolo at its peak', did not disappoint.

it was however shockingly young for my palate, packing stiff tannic punch (markedly more so than any of the other wines on the night). admittedly, pietro said he prefers his wines "younger, fresh and crunchy", which he stated earlier on when we were sipping the other two barolos. also worth mentioning that there was notable amplitude on the nose with more depth and savoury characteristics than its younger siblings, which grabbed everyone's attention.

a classy and complex wine that still needs another 3-5 years on its side imo. let's hope the fruit can keep up... if you must pop the cork now, lots of air, find a hearty protein, and enjoy, as we did.

ps cheers to you, uncle victor... a standout evening, good sir.

May 11, 2016 - Deeper perfume and on the palate richer with some density more so than sap. Balsamic notes add to the whole. It is softer around the edges than I would prefer, but has a drinkability and is easy to like if not to ponder. A little soft around the edges and lacking focus in spite of its underlying qualities keeps it from outstanding for me. Still a very enjoyable glass of wine.
