June 1, 2019 - Lightly decanted for an hour and a half. At first, tobacco/cigar and dark fruit playing coy from the shadows. After giving it even more air, it opens up more and blackberry/black cherry, and a big swath of minerality. On the palate, much less reserved with racy black cherry, a splash of cassis, followed by mouth filling tannins, and lastly a spicy acidity finish. As with mauritson's other wines, concentrated, but balanced acidity and tannins. Maybe not quite as complex as the $48 price tag, but well made and enjoyable.

48% Cabernet, 47% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot at 14.75 abv, 22 months in French, % new unspecified.

Paired with a flat iron steak cooked Jamie Oliver style in a cast iron skillet with a quinoa, spinach, almond, roasted tomato salad.

March 10, 2019 - Decanted for 30 minutes. Very nice balanced blend. Tannins have smoothed but still maintain a good backbone. Lots of dark fruit, primarily blackberries. Long finish. In a great place right now.

December 3, 2016 - I tested out my new Coravin by doing a 4-way tasting of 2013 Rockpile Bordeaux bottlings with my niece Carol. The wines were the Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Buck Pasture blend.

The Cab Franc was really nice. Good acid. Light bodied. Medium-long finish. Missing a little oomph in the mid-palate, but that’s mainly because it was 100% CF. Better alone than with brie or steak. 89

The Cab Sauv (81% CS) had the great mid-palate that the CF lacked. Really nice classic CS fruit profile of cassis and a little cherry. No earthiness, eucalyptus, anise, or olive to speak of. Very good finish. EDIT: Upgraded to 91 upon re-tasting the next day. "Juicy" fruit with solid tannic backbone.

The Malbec was a little less well rounded initially and wasn’t great on it’s own. Better with brie and almonds (more so than other nuts), and later it opened nicely and went great with steak. Very dark with a little earthiness and anise. Really nice finish. 91

The Buck Pasture Red Blend was also initially a bit closed, but started getting better with the cheese & nuts and really was singing with the steak. Less tannic backbone than the cab, but greater complexity with a long finish. 91
