Community Tasting Notes 4

January 26, 2019 - 13,5% alcohol, 4 g/l residual sugar, 4,9 g/l acidity. According to the producer, "a little percentage of the wine is aged in 25hl French barrels to enhance both complexity and structure."

Very dark-toned, almost fully opaque black cherry. Quite dry, dark-toned and savory nose with aromas of sour cherries, bloody game, some sweet black cherries, light earthy tones, a hint of toasted wood and a touch of sappy herbal character. The wine is medium-bodied, lively and quite crunchy on the palate, but surprisingly oaky as well, contrasting the nose that didn't show that much wood. There are flavors of ripe black cherries, some sweet oak spice, light plummy tones, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light vanilla tones and a hint of mocha. The structure relies more on the high acidity, but the gently gripping medium tannins lend some sense of structure as well. The finish is spicy, somewhat oaky and medium long with flavors of sweet black cherries, some woody spice, light peppery tones, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, a hint of ripe cranberry and a touch of vanilla.

Otherwise an enjoyably fresh, crunchy and nicely bitter Sangiovese di Romagna, but the overall taste is somewhat marred by the rather noticeable vanilla oak character. There's a nice little Sangiovese underneath, but the sweet-toned crowdpleaser oak notes really distract from the pleasure. What confuses me is how the producer says that only a small part of the wine is aged in French oak barrels, and even those are supposed to be large (2500 liters). If that is the case, where does the oak spice and vanilla come from? Am I imagining things? Nevertheless, at 12,98€ this is not really a bad purchase - even though it is really not my cup of tea.

September 1, 2017 - Romagna Tasting notes (Cesena): Rubino profondo. Ventaglio olfattivo complesso ed elegante, con note speziate di caffè e tabacco unite ad una prugna matura. Bocca morbida e di struttura, con buona freschezza ed un tannino vivo. Persistente, sui sentori speziati dati da una barrique nobile.
