October 7, 2023 - So this is a remarkable re-encounter with this wine. Today I visited a friend of mine who joined me on my first visit to La Magia back in 2005. It was the year that we bought quite a bit of that epic 1999 Brunello Riserva. And a year later this 2001 Brunello.
Now I had finished all my bottles many years ago. He still had one left.
Today we drank it alongside the 2012 Brunello. It is in superb shape!

Ruby/garnet colour. Full aromas of fresh cherry, leather, some hay and bayleaf and hints of wet earth and mushrooms. Full bodied with silky smooth tannins and sweetness of fruit. A long finish that remains fresh.
    Drink now!

November 10, 2017 - Delicious old Brunello. Tertiary and complex. Drink soon.

April 13, 2015 - Slightly rusty red here after a little over 13 years in the bottle. I'm sure it's not as dark as it was upon release. On the nose I get a musty closet, mothball smell along with high pitch pine resin, rooty earth and soil, and a touch of clove and leather. The fruit has either boarded the train and left the station or is buried under everything else meaning this is in a very backward stage. I'm thinking the fruit has mostly left the building never to return. Where does it go? The palate is a bit dilute, hard, and angular with a ton of menthol but again almost no fruit. I can appreciate the Mangia for being old world but is just not very friendly. To sum it all up I would describe this as a disjointed lean machine. Drink now through 2018.

December 25, 2013 - Opened one hour prior to dinner which was rack of lamb. Dark ruby color with strong black fruit coming out along with a licorice with a hint a chocolate on the back side. Very good Brunello happy to have three bottles left
