Community Tasting Notes 2

September 30, 2022 - From a double magnum (!) that I don't know the full history of, but looked beautiful with great fill level and no damage to wax seal. Cork came out cleanly. Unfortunately had little-to-no fruit left and had a smell that was not wet cardboard / corked, but was kind of off (sorry, was 3 weeks ago, so doing this from memory.) Still drinkable, but if I had paid anywhere near retail for the bottle, I'd be sorely disappointed. We compared it to a recent non-Poggio vintage, and it lost out to that $20 bottle. I put one standard bottle (750 ml) full away for a week in the fridge and drank it cold. Was perhaps better, but still one of my bigger wine letdowns ever.

August 26, 2018 - My second bottle after last year's birthday. 1975 is my birth year and bordeaux has been disappointing so I am branching out. A less than perfect bottle. The cork was sunken about an eight of an inch. Color is extraordinary for a 43 year old drink. Dark Ruby to the rim but translucent upon close inspection. Complex nose of mild charcuterie, fresh cut oranges, and iron.
The nose is almost identical to the flavors except for some tannins standing guard. This bodes extremely well for this wine going forward. Gratefully I have had a decent amount of very old wine and I can tell this one has the stuffing to last another 5-12 years based on the fruit left and the quality of tannins still present. Monsanto did a wonderful job with this Monopole.
