July 31, 2019 - On initial pour, the nose was kicking out all sorts of floral and ripe black cherry notes. But alas, the front end of the attack delivered primary and somewhat linear on the palate. No surprise given its youth, but even with air, it was a bit of a stubborn bumpkin in terms of overall flavor expansion. Specific notes of cranberry, red currant, black cherry, and some subtle white pepper emerged. Mid-palate rode high and superficial, finishing clamped and grippy.

The stuffing is certainly there, but it’ll likely take 5-7+ years to coax out the fruit more on this NSG. A potentially good wine in the making, but patience is certainly required. 92+ points for now, with upside after 2025++.

October 13, 2018 - I thought this might be the last occasion to check in on the 2015 before they go into hibernation… tasted next to the Les Cailles. Super fascinating how different they are. While the Les Cailles is as always the more accessible, radiant, perfumed and "feminine" (for lack of a better word), this vintage of Vaucrains is surprisingly open, but still more clenched than the Cailles. And of course also very different in aromatics.

Notes of sweet red and dark red fruit, cranberries, red currant but also cassis, there is this pungent ferrous minerality only Vaucrains is able to achieve, but also lifted notes of crushed violets, and some smoke and spices. It's medium-full bodied, dense and powerful, note surprisingly more structured than the Cailles, with high acidity cutting through the richness and high but incredibly classy tannin. Superb length with a touch of bitterness on the finish. A superb, structued, age-worthy but at this stage surprisingly delicious Vaucrains of the highest level. This will of course need a few years longer... Wow! (95-97)

May 12, 2018 - HALLELUJAH. First burgundy I've opened in eons without any CO2 fizz whatsoever. Also the best Chevillon Vaucrains in years, which shouldn't be much of a surprise considering the vintage. This is often hard to taste on release but this year it's brimming with so much sweet, succulent fruit it's easy to enjoy. There is a tart zing to it, a twist of cranberry and wild berry adding some high notes and freshening up a fruit profile that's otherwise deep and saucy. It's also built on a base of intense stoniness. Notwithstanding the generosity of the fruit there is still something monolithic about it, something at the core that remains impenetrable, that's very classic Vaucrains. A full day later this has barely budged, except that the tannins stand out even more for their refinement. 2015 vintage is the real deal.
